How can I backup or transfer PoiEdit settings?

Sometimes you might need to backup Poi Edit settings, for instance if you want to reinstall Windows or transfer the settings to another PC. You can backup the settings as follows:

  • Start Registry Editor: Start Menu -> Run -> Enter regedit.exe -> Click OK
  • Go to Poi Edit key: Left pane -> Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Open Software -> Open Dnote Software -> Select node PoiEdit
  • Select menu File -> Export
  • In the Export Registry File dialog enter the desired location and filename for your backup
  • Done
To restore the backup or transfer the settings to another PC do the following (on the PC you want apply the settings to):
  • Start Registry Editor: Start Menu -> Run -> Enter regedit.exe -> Click OK
  • Go to Poi Edit key: Left pane -> Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Open Software -> Open Dnote Software -> Open PoiEdit -> Select node AutoUpdateItems
  • Select menu Edit -> Delete (or press Del key)
  • Select OK to confirm deletion of the selected key
  • Double click the .reg file that you've created in the list above.

Be extremely careful when editing the registry, making wrong edits can make Windows or other programs to behave differently or even stop working at all!

Never transfer settings between different versions of Poi Edit!

How can I start PoiEdit hidden in the tray at system startup?

Just add a shortcut to PoiEdit in the Startup section of your Start Menu (on Windows XP this is Start Menu | All Programs | Startup). In this shortcut append /tray to the PoiEdit executable filename:

Some programs open PoiEdit instead of Google Earth!

If you checked (or left checked) the "Google Earth (*.kml)" extension in the PoiEdit installation program, PoiEdit shall be associated with the .kml file format. This means that when you double-click a .kml file, it will open up in PoiEdit. This also means that if other applications (like MapSource) open Google Earth through a .kml file, it will open up PoiEdit instead of Google Earth. This is wonderful news of course, this is what you want. However if you don't want this you have to reassign the .kml format to Google Earth. You do this by opening Windows Explorer (you open this for example by double-clicking "My Computer" on the desktop) and going to the Folder Options (below menu Tools). In the Folder Options dialog you open the File Types tab and look for the KML file format extension in the "Extensions" column of the list. Once found, select it and click "Change". A new dialog called "Open With" will open from which you need to select "Google Earth" in the "Programs" list. If it is not listed, you need to add it using the "Browse..." button, and go to the directory where you installed Google Earth, and select the Google Earth .exe file. Make sure the check the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" in the "Open With" dialog.
